The Gauteng Department of Health, in partnership with Novo Nordisk and the City of Johannesburg, will host a two-day summit to commemorate World Obesity Day under the theme "Changing Systems, Healthier Lives." The summit, starting on 4 March 2025, will be opened by MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, alongside Novo Nordisk Vice President and General Manager, Sara Norcross, and City of Johannesburg MMC for Health and Social Development, Councillor Ennie Makhafola.
South Africa's selection as one of six countries in Novo Nordisk's Cities for Better Health Childhood Obesity Prevention Initiative underscores the nation's commitment to addressing childhood obesity, particularly in urban areas like Johannesburg. The World Health Organization reports that 39 million children under the age of five were overweight or obese in 2020. In South Africa, approximately 13% of children aged 6-14 are affected, highlighting the urgency of this initiative.
The summit, which coincides with World Obesity Day on 04 March, aims to explore evidence-based strategies to combat childhood obesity, improve patient care, and foster collaborations among healthcare professionals, policymakers, and community leaders.
Members of the media are invited to attend and cover the summit as follows:
Date: Tuesday, 04 March 2025
Time: 09h00 am
Venue: The Capital Empire PI, Sandhurst, Sandton
