Department of Health 2025/04/14 - 22:00
As the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) continues to roll out new infrastructure and capacitate health facilities with modernised equipment, the Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital (DGMAH) in Ga-Rankuwa has become a flagship site for transformation in public healthcare delivery.
The hospital on Wednesday, 09 April, unveiled several cutting-edge diagnostic machines, including an MRI scanner, CT scanner, and a Cath lab machine, supported by the installation of new ICU beds in the refurbished Trauma Intensive Care Unit. These investments are set to improve the hospital's capacity to provide fast, accurate diagnoses and lifesaving interventions, reducing waiting times and improving patient outcomes.
The infrastructure upgrades also include the refurbishment of Ward 14, Ward 29, Ward 9, the Antenatal Care (ANC) Clinic, the Female Mental Health Unit, and the Trauma ICU. These improvements are designed to provide a more patient-centred experience while creating a better working environment for healthcare professionals.
The CEO of the Hospital, Dr Godfrey Mbara said that the refurbished wards are not the end of it as there are more refurbishments that are being undertaken across the facility, including new equipment such as the laundry machines to ensure that the facility is self-sufficient.
"We used to rely on Steve Biko Academic Hospital for many services. This allowed us to only book a limited number patients a day for procedures. However, for the past month over 400 procedures have been conducted because now we are servicing these patients in-house with the new equipment we have procured," said Mbara.
MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko praised the leadership of the hospital for seeing through the commitment to improve health services in line with the Gauteng Provincial Government's ongoing commitment to improve the quality of healthcare services across the province.
"I want to sincerely thank Dr Mbara for the incredible work he has done in just a year since his appointment. His leadership has breathed new life into this institution. Today's unveiling is proof of what determined leadership can achieve in a short space of time." She said.
