Gauteng Traffic Police are investigating the unpleasant remarks made by one of its Chief Provincial Inspectors.

This after a video went viral depicting the inspector in an altercation with a cell phone store official in Heidelberg.

In the video, the officer is heard uttering and exchanging unpleasant remarks in full view of staff and customers.

Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson, Sello Maremane said it was not clear what led to the altercation in the store that led to the officer being aggressive in the manner in which he did.

Maremane said law enforcement officers are expected to conduct themselves in an exemplary manner which is consistent with the code of conduct even when confronted with challenges.

"The Gauteng Traffic Police wishes to state categorically that this incident will be fully investigated, and we are appealing to the store official to come forth and give us a statement detailing the circumstances and events which led to the argument.

A traffic officer in uniform is a peace officer appointed in terms of the Criminal Procedure Act, this means that wherever our traffic officers are deployed, they should at all times advocate for peace amongst the members of the public.

No law enforcement official has a right to abuse community members regardless of their status in society and even with the slightest provocation.

Maremane urged members of the public to report such unruly and unbecoming conduct by any of their members.
