On Thursday, 28 November, the Gauteng Department of Social Development commemorated World AIDS Day under the theme “Take the Right Path: My Health, My Right.”

The event, held at Magaliesburg Park in the Western Corridor, brought together more than 250 Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVC) infected or affected by HIV and AIDS. The day was designed to offer these children emotional relief through engaging in fun-filled activities, providing a temporary escape from the challenges and trauma of their circumstances.

The programme began with presentations from various stakeholders who educated the children on self-care, the importance of hygiene, healthy living, and personal safety. They emphasized the need to report inappropriate behavior or actions that made them feel uncomfortable.

The children then participated in playful activities, including indigenous games, coordinated by the Gauteng Departments of Education, Sports, Arts, Culture, and Recreation.

Ms. Boingotlo Magabe, a Social Worker from the Western Corridor, highlighted the value of play in supporting the children’s well-being. “Play not only reduces anxiety but also fosters resilience,” she explained. “It promotes physical health, which is vital for maintaining their strength and immunity.”

Ms. Asinathi Alaerts from Rotenganedza NPO shared uplifting stories about how children have positively influenced their families. “Many parents tell us how their children remind them to take their medication and even bring them water when it’s time. Supporting your parents in this way helps to prolong their lives,” she encouraged the young attendees.

The event concluded with a candlelight ceremony to honour friends and family lost to HIV/AIDS, support those living with the condition, and raise awareness about its impact.
