Yes, November Was International Men’s Month!

November 19 marked International Men’s Day, a day that often goes unnoticed by many men and women alike. It’s almost like wishing someone a happy birthday without them knowing the occasion exists.

Last week, the Western Corridor celebrated this important day, though it was a new concept for most attendees. While the Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD) recognized positive male role models during the 10th annual 365 Men of the Year Awards on the actual day, it is evident that more awareness and promotion of International Men’s Day (IMD) and International Men’s Month is needed.

Studies by Health Action Poverty have shown that men are predominantly reported as perpetrators of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). In response to this, the Southern Corridor in Sebokeng held a significant celebration for International Men’s Month, attended by young boys and men from the Westside Park community. Skawara We-Are-One, a local community-based organization, performed a drama that addressed GBV, and other social issues associated with men, while emphasizing the importance of reclaiming identity, rehabilitation, affirmation, and healing.

Men have the power to challenge the negative stereotypes imposed on them and transform these perceptions into positive ones. This can be achieved through key pillars: promoting positive male role models, celebrating men’s contributions, focusing on men’s health and wellbeing, highlighting discrimination against men, improving gender relations, and fostering gender equality to create a safer world for all.

“Men, guard your post. Leaving it empty invites anger and substance abuse – nurture your potential like a seed planted in a garden,” said Bethuel Mokoena, GDSD Social Worker.

A praise poet inspired attendees with a performance that called on men to take responsibility, uphold morals, practice discipline, and build a lasting legacy.

Mark November 19 on your calendar and commit to incorporating these six pillars into your daily life, leading up to the next International Men’s Day and the month of November. You deserve to be celebrated!
