The Gauteng Department of Social Development's Southern Corridor, in collaboration with the National Department of Social Development, launched a two-day Capacity Building Workshop last week at the JC Knoetze Hall in Sebokeng.

The workshop aimed to empower 522 Social Auxiliary Workers (SAWs) with essential knowledge on the implementation of the Social Services Professions Act

While many of these workers had not received prior training on the Act, this workshop provided vital insights into its implications for their everyday work.

Participants learned about the scope of their practice, professional conduct, and the importance of maintaining registration with the South African Council of Social Services Professions (SACSSP). The training also covered the ethics and disciplinary processes surrounding the Act, as well as the steps taken when cases of misconduct are reported.

Nolita Ludwaba from the National Department of Social Development emphasized the importance of understanding the Social Services Professions Act, explaining that various legislations, such as the Substance Abuse Act and the Children’s Act, regulate the work of Social Workers and Auxiliary Workers. “Promoting compliance with the Act is key to effective service delivery,” she said.

To ensure comprehensive professional development, Tebogo Morokane, Office Manager in the Office of the Deputy Director-General (DDG), revealed that upcoming training sessions will also target Social Work Supervisors and Managers, as well as Child and Youth Care Workers, to ensure compliance across all Social Services professions.

This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing the capacity and professionalism of social services in Gauteng, ensuring workers are equipped to better serve the community.
