​On the special day of global recognition for the elderly, the Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD) proudly joined the world in celebrating the International Day for Older Persons by launching the long-awaited Mohlakeng New Old Age Home in the West Rand on 01 October 2024.
This year's theme, "Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide," serves as a powerful reminder of the need to honour and care for our senior citizens.
The New Mohlakeng Old Age Home, originally constructed in 2010 as part of the 20 Prototype Townships Project, has been restored and made ready to house 76 senior citizens. While initially registered under the Older Persons Act (Act 13 of 2006), structural challenges such as roof leaks and plumbing issues delayed its operation. Today, however, GDSD is thrilled to see this vital facility open its doors to serve the community's elders, ensuring they have a safe and dignified place to call home.
Addressing the gathered senior citizens, Gauteng MEC for Social Development, Faith Mazibuko, emphasized the Department's commitment to their well-being: "This Old Age centre will meet your aspirations, especially for those older persons seeking independent living and frail care accommodation. We will also engage with the Department of Human Settlement to explore possibilities for future housing solutions."
Mazibuko also announced, "To the residents of Bekkersdal, we will be launching a multi-purpose centre next January, further expanding our efforts to provide services to older persons. We are opening an older persons day care centre where the senior citizens will interact with their peers while knitting and participating in various activity aging activities"
The Chairperson of the Mohlakeng Older Persons Forum, Nelly Moeng, expressed her gratitude, she said, "This is an exciting day for us as we finally launch our home. Many senior citizens face exploitation and abuse, locked away in their own homes. This facility offers them a place of refuge, safety, and dignity." She also urged the Department to strengthen its support, calling for the hiring of more healthcare professionals to meet the needs of the residents.
The Rand West City Deputy Mayor, Nontombi Dyase, echoed these sentiments, encouraging the community to protect the new facility: "This centre is a safe haven for our elders. It is a place where they can receive the care and respect, they deserve."
The Gauteng Department of Social Development is currently facilitating the appointment of a Non-Profit Organization (NPO) to manage the centre for the next six months, ensuring the smooth transition of services for its new residents. Additionally, the department is in the process of filling critical vacant posts to guarantee the best possible care for the elders.
The opening of the New Mohlakeng Old Age Home is more than just the establishment of a physical space, it is a profound symbol of our collective responsibility to protect and honour those who have come before us. As we celebrate this International Day for Older Persons, we reflect on the importance of providing our elders with the respect, care, and dignity they deserve.
