The Gauteng Department of Social Development has assured residents in Etwatwa, Ekurhuleni Region that it will assist non-compliant Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centres to comply with norms and standards as stipulated in the Children's Act 38 of 2005.
Social Worker Phamela Hlongwane stated during the ECD Awareness Session that took place at Stompie Skhosana Hall on Thursday.
She said it is the responsibility of the Department of Social Development to ensure that all unregistered and non-compliant ECDs are equipped with information so that they adhere to the norms and standards as prescribed by the Act.
Amongst the participants were City of Ekurhuleni's Emergency Medical Services (EMS), City Planning and Environmental Health Practitioners.
Speaking to caregivers, Maswazi Mdluli from the EMS said before children can be housed, there must be a certified structure that must be approved by the City Planning unit.
"One of the aspects that our inspectors check is the fire protection plan, to see whether fire equipment is installed to ensure that children are not at risk. We also check the first aid equipment, floor plan, and evacuation plans in case of an emergency," said Mdluli.
Sibusiso Mkhize from the City Planning unit said before a location is passed for a child care facility, they check if there are no shebeens and other places that may cause distractions nearby the facility.
"One of the documents we need to approve a location are copies of a title deed, affidavit, letter of authority from the court, proclamation, and a motivational letter," he added.
The department will continue to engage communities in all regions to ensure ECD compliance and safety of children.
