Gauteng facilities continue to improve OHSC compliance - 1 June 2025

Department of Health 2025/06/02 - 22:00

The South Rand Hospital has become the latest Gauteng public health facility to be awarded a certificate for the improvement achieved in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) compliance. The certificate was presented to the CEO of the hospital, Simphiwe Gada during the hospital's Nurses Day celebrations.

The hospital has improved from 86% in 2023/24 to 93% in 2024/25, achieving excellence in compliance status. This outstanding progress reflects the commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy environment for both patients and staff.

MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko said that the improvement in OHSC compliance meant that the facility meets all legal requirements to be designated a hospital and have taken the first step towards readiness for National Health Insurance (NHI) readiness.

"At the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH), we take issues of OHS seriously. We are working to ensure that all our facilities achieve 90% or above for compliance like South Rand Hospital. Currently our facilities are at 75% and above in OHS Compliance as of April 2025," said MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko.

Meanwhile, MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko on Thursday, 29 May 2025 joined the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi at the Progressive Business Forum's stakeholder engagement on Unpacking NHI. The engagement, which was attended by other provincial MECs, CEOs of hospitals, healthcare professionals and private medical aid providers aimed to further unpack the NHI Act fund which will help South Africa realise universal health coverage for all.

The NHI will ensure that everyone receive the health care they need without suffering financial hardship. Currently, the public health sector is currently providing health care services to 84% of the population while the private sector only covers 16%.

Public health care cost has kept increasing while public hospitals and clinics are under growing pressure limiting immediate access. The NHI will improve access to services for the majority of people.

The GDoH has made demonstrable progress in advancing institutional readiness for the implementation of the NHI. This readiness is being systematically tracked across multiple workstreams, including clinical governance, infrastructure, systems integration, and financial accountability. These elements collectively reflect the Department's commitment to aligning with the statutory accreditation and service delivery standards required under the NHI Act.

In addition, the GDoH has prioritised compliance with the standards set by the OHSC. High-volume hospitals and primary healthcare facilities have been supported through mentorship, compliance improvement plans, and capacity-building interventions. Facility performance is monitored through mock inspections and aligned to the Ideal Clinic and Ideal Hospital frameworks. This ensures that only accredited and quality-assured facilities will enter into future NHI contracts.
