At Kwaggafontein Primary Farm School in Tarlton, the Gauteng Department of Social Development and government partners gathered on Thursday, 07 November 2024, to address the escalating teenage pregnancy rates among learners. Tarlton clinic recently reported over twenty deliveries by mothers under sixteen, many of whom attend the school.

Located near Krugersdorp, Kwaggafontein Primary serves largely underprivileged learners from nearby informal settlements. According to program coordinator Tanya Kriel, the initiative aims to educate students on issues such as teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, bullying, rape, and gangsterism. Recognizing the sensitive nature of these topics, organizers divided the students into gender-specific groups, creating a space for open dialogue and questions.

Phindile Zukane from the South African Police Service emphasized the vital role of parents in monitoring and guiding their children. Additionally, Humbulani Ndou from the Men’s Forum encouraged educators to work closely with parents, recognizing that parental involvement is crucial to supporting students’ well-being.

For the students, the visit from Social Workers and police reinforced their own roles within their families and communities, underscoring the importance of accountability and openness.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development continues to prioritize outreach in rural schools, working to foster awareness and provide support amidst rising social challenges.
