The Role of Men in Families Is Transforming, Says Prof. Dyasi

Gender and HIV/AIDS activist Professor Mbulelo Dyasi has emphasized the evolving role of men in families, stating that traditional gender norms are giving way to a more inclusive and supportive form of masculinity.

Dyasi noted that this positive shift is evident in men's increased participation in childcare, the sharing of household responsibilities, and their growing role in providing emotional support to partners and children.

He was speaking at the International Day of Families celebration held last Thursday at PGCC Church in Buhle Park, Eastern Corridor. The event was organized by the Gauteng Department of Social Development and was attended by over 300 community members, including older adults, Persons with Disabilities, youth, and representatives of faith-based organizations from across the province.

Addressing the audience, Dyasi expressed his pride in contributing to the conversation around the evolving roles of men.

“This conversation challenges traditional gender norms and promotes a more inclusive and nurturing form of masculinity. Initially, I thought this topic would be difficult to tackle, but it became clear how relatable it is, especially when I embrace my identity as a kasi man,” he said.

He highlighted several factors driving this transformation, including societal evolution, progressive policies such as paternity leave, and a growing awareness of the benefits of gender-equitable parenting for everyone.

According to Dyasi, the key aspects of men’s evolving roles include:

  • Increased Involvement in Child care and Housework: Men are now actively engaged in raising children and managing household duties, moving beyond the outdated role of being solely breadwinners.
  • Emotional Support and Nurturing: There is a growing emphasis on men providing emotional care, which strengthens family bonds and promotes healthy emotional development in children.
  • Challenging Traditional Masculinity: More men are standing up to outdated stereotypes of dominance, stoicism, and emotional suppression.
  • Promoting Positive Masculinity: There’s a shift towards an inclusive understanding of masculinity that empowers men to express their identities authentically and without fear of judgment.
  • Impact on Families: These changing roles have a profoundly positive impact—enhancing family cohesion, advancing gender equality, and improving child development outcomes.
  • Policy and Program Support: Governments and NPOs are implementing supportive measures, such as paternity leave and parenting programs that promote gender equality.
  • Paternity Leave: This policy allows men to support their families during significant life events, including childbirth and early parenting.
  • Fatherhood Training Programs: These initiatives equip men with parenting skills and foster strong community networks.
  • Gender Equality: Evolving male roles are a key driver in achieving gender equality both at home and in society at large.

Dyasi concluded by encouraging communities to embrace and support this transformation to build a society where men are celebrated as active, nurturing participants in family life.
