Healthcare workers pledge to Serve with a Smile - 29 September 2024

Thousands of healthcare workers in the Sedibeng District Health Services have vowed to serve patients with a smile, in their interactions.

Employees in Sedibeng enthusiastically committed to improve patient experience of care as part of the district launch of the I Serve With a Smile. This is part of the Gauteng Department of Health's (GDoH) commitment towards making a lasting positive impact on on the treatment given to patients.

The campaign was provincially launched in November 2023 is part of the GDoH's ongoing efforts to create a sustained culture of empathy and compassion that permeates every aspect of the Gauteng healthcare delivery.                                             

MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko led the district launch of the campaign saying that it encourages frontline workers to put their best foot forward by being welcoming, and kind and to always carry out their tasks with a smile.

"This initiative is about restoring patient trust, boosting staff morale, fostering a positive work environment and engaging the community. Whether we are serving patients in the district hospitals or reaching out to them in their homes through mobile units, we will serve them with care and compassion. Our message is clear, wherever you are, whoever you are, your health matters to us!" stated the MEC.

Since its launch, the GDoH has onboarded the majority of its healthcare facilities which is contributing towards a more positive experience at the point of care. Through the onboarding sessions, the department is ensuring that its employees are aligned with the outcomes of the programme which calls for all staff to display acts of courtesy, care, empathy, and compassion when serving patients. 

The campaign is built upon the principles of Batho Pele and implores healthcare workers to create an environment where patients feel valued, respected, and supported whenever they visit GDoH facilities. It also aims to strengthening efforts to improve staff morale ensuring service delivery.  

"We want to serve patients and their families in a way that restores the dignity of people who are dependent on the public healthcare system for health services. Every clinic visit, every hospital stay, and every service interaction must be turned into a positive experience for patients," concluded the MEC.
