International Men’s Day Celebrated In Western Corridor

Department of Social Development 2024/11/29 - 22:00

More than 100 men gathered to celebrate International Men's Day at the Chief Mogale Hall in the Western Corridor. Hosted by the Gauteng Department of Social Development, the event carried the theme "Positive Male Role Models" and brought together men from diverse communities to address critical issues affecting men while celebrating their contributions to society.

Dressed in coordinated white tops and black trousers, the attendees embodied unity and purpose, reflecting the theme of fostering responsible, supportive male figures in society.

Pearl Moabelo, Director of the Department's Social Crime Prevention and Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP), highlighted the significance of the day, emphasizing the need to focus on issues such as parenting, abuse, homelessness, mental health, and violence that impact men globally.

"International Men's Day is an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the contributions and sacrifices men make in our communities. It's also a call to action for men to collaborate with women in advancing educational, social, and economic development," said Moabelo.

Nicolas Khauli from the Anova Health Institute addressed the challenges of openly discussing sexual health, mental health, and depression among men.

"Men are not easy to bring together under one roof, let alone open up about their struggles. This event is a significant step forward," said Khauli.

Khauli also shed light on the reluctance of men to seek help, particularly in areas like HIV counselling and testing.

"Many men come for initial consultations but never return for their results or follow-ups, leaving critical health concerns unaddressed. Events like this are essential to breaking the stigma and encouraging open dialogue."

For Nkosikhona Buthelezi, the event was eye-opening. "I came here because my neighbor invited me, and I'm glad I did. The speakers shared invaluable information that will help me make better decisions for myself and my family," said Buthelezi.

International Men's Day serves as a reminder of the importance of uplifting men as positive role models and addressing their unique challenges. Through such gatherings, the Gauteng Department of Social Development aims to create a space where men can connect, learn, and grow, making strides toward healthier choices, and producing more responsible male figures in communities.

This celebration not only spotlighted the issues men face but also inspired hope for a future where men actively contribute to building stronger families and societies.
