Growing up without emotional support can leave deep scars, often leading young people down destructive paths in search of belonging. For *Thabo Mkhize (not his real name), this journey took him from neglect and addiction to crime and incarceration, but it didn't end there.
A Life Spiralling Out of ControlThabo,a19-year-oldfromJohannesburg,wasraisedbya single parent before moving in with his grandmother. Feeling neglected and unsupported, he struggled in school, failing Grade 9 twice before dropping out in 2020. Seeking comfort, he turned to the streets, where he fell in with the wrong crowd and was soon consumed by drugs and crime.“When I was high on drugs, I was fearless. I couldn’t control myself. I used to go around robbing people,” he recalls.At just 16 years old, Thabo made a devastating choice, stabbing as school pupil during a robbery. The victim did not survive, and Thabo was soon arrested and sentenced to three years at Soshanguve Secure Care Centre (SSCC). A place that ensures rehabilitation on physical and behavioural restoration of young people who are in conflict with the law.A Second Chance Behind BarsRather than resist rehabilitation, Thabo embraced it.Under the guidance of Social Workers and correctional programs, he began to transform his life.“This place gave me a second chance. Had I not come here, my life could have been worse,” said Thabo.His dedication did not go unnoticed. Sanelisiwe Shazi, a team leader at SSCC, praised his commitment to change: “Thabo arrived with the right mindset. He has never caused problems here and continues to be someone we trust and rely on.”Rebuilding a FutureDuring his time at SSCC, Thabo acquired valuable skills, earning certificates in Agriculture and IT Computer Skills.He has also managed to quit drugs, mend his family relationships, and develop a plan for his future.Upon release, Thabo aims to return to school and pursue a career as a mechanic, eventually opening his own mechanical workshop to provide job opportunities for young people in his community.“I have changed for the better. I’ve stopped smoking, I’ve fixed my relationship with my family, and I’m focused on building a positive future,” he said.Turning Mistakes Into MotivationThabo’s story is a powerful reminder that even the most troubled past can lead to a hopeful future. With the right support, redemption is possible, and for Thabo, the journey from crime to purpose has just begun.
