Committees welcome continued patient care despite fire incidents at Tembisa hospital

Department of Health 2025/04/28 - 22:00

Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Health and the Gauteng Provincial Legislature's Health and Wellness Portfolio Committee commended the efforts by the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) to ensure continued care and treatment of patients at Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital (TPTH) following two separate fire incidents.

The hospital had to be put on ambulance divert after fire affected the Accident and Emergency on 19 April in the afternoon and the Outpatient Department on 23 April in the morning respectively.

The Portfolio Committee on Health (Parliament) has on Friday, 25 April 2025, conducted an oversight visit at TPTH while the Health and Wellness Portfolio Committee (Legislature) also visited the facility on Tuesday, 22 April 2024. The reason for these visits was to establish the extent of the fire damage caused by the fire incidents as well as get an update from the GDoH on contingency measures in place.

Dr Karl Willem du Pré le Roux, member of the Portfolio Committee on Health said that the oversight visit was positive as they were reassured by the Gauteng Department of Health that patients will continue to receive care albeit the fire incidents.

"We are concerned about what has happened and the course of the fire, and are awaiting investigations. However, we are reassured by the fact that the Department seems to be proactive in trying to reopen wards and making sure that patients that were diverted from Tembisa Hospital will be able to come back here.

"I think that there is still quite a lot to be done but my general sense is that this has been a positive visit and it has been good to see the proactive approach from the Department," said Dr le Roux.

On the other hand, the Health and Wellness Portfolio Committee led by Adv. Ezra Letsoalo was also pleased with the developments to ensure that patients continue to receive care at Tembisa Hospital. The Committee conducted their oversight visit on Tuesday prior to the second fire incident.

Adv. Letsoalo said although the committee conducted their oversight that the Department took them into confidence about the contingency measures in place to remedy the inconvenience caused by the fire incident.

"We really hope that the Department's efforts will be strengthened to ensure that the hospital resumes to full functionality across all its sections," said Adv. Letsoalo.

In addition, the Portfolio Committee on Health also conducted an oversight visit at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital. They toured the facility including the newly refurbished 40-bed Postnatal C-section Ward and the upgraded Radiology Unit which is now equipped with a new MRI scanner, as well as the 40-bed Postnatal C-section Ward which has been revamped.

Meanwhile, the work to open the temporary accident and emergency department at Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital is progressing well. The Family Medicine Department  has been converted into an alternative casualty. The facility is currently testing the system and has started attending to emergency walk-in patients before the ambulance divert can be lifted.

The department continues to encourage first-time patients to always start at their local clinics and only visit a hospital when referred by the primary healthcare facility as this is in line with the referral pathway to manage patient flow from lower level of care to a higher level.
