Gauteng health on track to conclude remaining food contracts - 6 October 2024

Department of Health 2024/10/07 - 22:00

The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) has made a significant progress in finalising its food contracts with six of the nine contacts already awarded while three contracts are in the final stages prior to being awarded.

Out of the six contacts awarded for a three-year period, four end in 2027 (supply and delivery of processed vegetables, supply and delivery of frozen vegetables, fish, chicken products, supply and delivery of eggs, supply and delivery of bread, rolls & buns), one in August 2026 (supply and delivery of red meat) as it was awarded in September 2023, while another ends in July 2025 (supply and delivery of frozen products, fish, chicken, and vegetable) and was awarded in August 2022.

The department is in the final stage of concluding the remaining three contracts. One for groceries, one for fresh fruits and vegetables and one for dairy products.

In the meantime, the GDoH is currently participating in the Free State contract for the supply and delivery of perishable and non-perishable items. This is in line with Treasury Regulation 16A.6.6. which states that an accounting officer or accounting authority may participate in any contract arranged by means of a competitive bidding process by any other organ of state, subject to the written approval of such organ of state and the relevant contractors. This approach ensures continuity of service and  allow GDoH to conclude its own contract for groceries, fresh fruits and vegetables.  The department is already in the process of finalising a contract for these two commodities.

It should be noted that the GDoH remains committed to ensuring the wellbeing of patients across healthcare facilities through continued service delivery which follows Supply Chain Management processes, as well as a sustainable and competitive bidding process.
