Remembering who we are : Gauteng celebrates Heritage Day - 24 September 2024

People from all walks of life, proudly dressed in traditional attire displaying a kaleidoscope of colours, joined this year's Heritage Day celebrations at Maropeng Cradle of Humankind in the West Rand on Tuesday,24 September 2024.

The Heritage Day celebrations reverberated with song and dance as brass bands, drum majorettes, and floats paraded through the heritage site in a colourful display of different tribes to celebrate diversity and the country's cultural history.

Addressing the gathering, Acting Gauteng Premier Vuyiswa Ramokgopa highlighted the significance of Heritage Day in connecting people to their roots and fostering a sense of pride in their heritage.

"It reminds us of the diverse cultures that make up our nation, encouraging people to embrace their identities. This day provides an opportunity to celebrate the various cultures in South Africa, promoting unity among different ethnic groups and also the importance of diversity as a strength.

"To encounter a variety of proudly South African produce cultivated on farms and even in our backyards. This experience inspires us to celebrate our heritage through food, a practice we should embrace daily," she said.

The event was attended by prominent figures, including MEC for Education and Sports, Arts, Culture, and Recreation Matome Chiloane, Executive Mayor of Mogale City Local Municipality Cllr. Danny Thupane, Deputy Mayor of Rand West City Local Municipality Cllr. Nontombi Dyase, and various representatives of royal houses.

In his welcoming address, MEC Chiloane reflected on the significance of the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage site that tells a profound human origin story.

"It tells a profound story, reminding us that a common ancestry lays beneath the surface of our apparent differences, whether in language, culture, or tradition.

"The fossils discovered hereā€¦speak to our shadow regions of a testament and fact that we are indeed one human family.

"We are gathered here to demonstrate, express and celebrate our pride in our heritage as South Africans. It's through cultural heritage that we can build our nation. We stand together with our shared South African identity. Let's celebrate the diversity that unites us and move forward with pride, building a future rooted in respect, equality, and justice for all," said MEC Chiloane.
