Overisght - Committee conducts visit to Mabopane licensing centre

Department of Roads and Transport 2024/09/24 - 22:00

Led by its chairperson, Gregory Schneemann, the Portfolio Committee for Roads and Transport undertook an oversight visit to the Mabopane licensing centre, in Tshwane on Thursday, 12 September 2024.

The visit served to assess service delivery challenges and intervention measures to improve services including motor vehicle registrations, license applications, license renewals, and motor vehicle testing.

Centre manager Mr Peter Ntlatleng took committee members on the tour through the centre to see for themselves the progress and outstanding work that still needs to be carried out.

They visited the driving licence testing and motor vehicle registration sections to inspect the buildings and operations. This also afforded members the opportunity to interact with clients.

In his reply earlier to questions from the committee, the centre manager indicated that much progress has been made and is reflected in improved revenue which has returned to pre-COVID levels, improved document and queue management.

He also outlined a number of steps undertaken to deal with issues brought about by systems downtime, loadshedding and the value of added capacity, through NYS, to enhance customer experience at the centre.

Mr Ntlatleng had also indicated the management was not responsible for activities outside the centre and they are reliant on the city’s law enforcement agencies. This after committee members raised issues with a variety of business activities being
operated outside and near the centre.

Directorate: Security Management and Logistical Support’s Sam Komana further shared with the committee plans currently underway to bring the vehicle testing station to life during this financial year. The committee had probed what plans were there to address the situation.

Also in attendance were Directors Mr Gopolang Masike and Russel Mahibila who provided insight into the various interventions by the Department.

Oversight visits serve to review and monitor public sector organisations and their policies, plans, programs, and projects to ensure they are achieving expected results; represent good value for money; and are in compliance with applicable
policies, regulations and ethical standards.
