Sedibeng Youth Overcomes Alcohol Addiction Through Department’s Support

Alcohol abuse remains a critical issue amongst young people in Sedibeng, fuelled by the easy availability of alcohol, unemployment, and weak law enforcement. This is according to the number of community members who attended one of Ke Moja anti-substance abuse activation in Bophelong.

Many young people, like 27-year-old Nteboheng Blom, find themselves turning to alcohol as a temporary escape from life’s hardships, only to fall into a destructive cycle that can strain family relationships and limit their potential.

After completing her studies but struggling to find employment, Blom began drinking regularly as a way to cope. Her turning point came when she joined Dirang Ka Kagiso, a Gauteng Social Development-supported community outreach and skills centre where she found support and encouragement to seek professional help. With assistance from Social Auxiliary Workers, Blom attended a rehabilitation programme provided by SANCA and is now six months sober.

Blom shared her story at a recent Ke Moja Friday campaign, saying she hopes to inspire others struggling with substance abuse. She emphasized the importance of seeking help, acknowledging one’s problems, and finding positive ways to handle life’s challenges. Now working as a caregiver through the Expanded Public Works Programme, Blom is committed to making a difference and plans to study Social Auxiliary Work next year.

Through campaigns like Ke Moja, the Gauteng Social Development Department continues its mission to reduce substance abuse and to support recovery across Gauteng.
